Green manure demonstrations
Interactive farmer–scientist sessions and practical demonstrations were built around three green manure crops, shown in the field and then incorporated to build soil nitrogen.
ICAR-Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur successfully launched a national awareness campaign on the balanced use of fertilizers under the Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav (MGMG) programme across selected districts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Odisha from 24 April to 25 June 2026. Dedicated teams of scientists from ICAR-IIPR and its regional centres and stations, in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendras, conducted extensive awareness and extension activities among farming communities.
A total of 1,626 farmers participated in the programmes, while digital advisories shared through WhatsApp groups and other media — particularly newspapers — benefited more than 10,000 farmers across the states. The campaign leveraged both physical and digital platforms to extend farmer outreach and promote scientific knowledge on balanced fertilizer use.
Special emphasis was placed on pulse-based cropping systems and the role of pulses in biological nitrogen fixation, reducing excessive dependence on chemical fertilizers and promoting sustainable agriculture. Overall, the campaign strengthened farmer awareness of scientific fertilizer use, soil health conservation, environmental sustainability and the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices.
What the campaign promoted
Soil testing
Testing before sowing so nutrient doses match what the soil actually needs.
Integrated Nutrient Management
Combining organic and inorganic sources rather than relying on chemical fertilizer alone.
Crop diversification
Breaking cereal-heavy rotations, with pulses as the pivot crop.
Green manuring
Dhaincha, cowpea and moong grown and incorporated to build soil nitrogen.
Biofertilizers
Rhizobium and other microbial inoculants in place of part of the nitrogen dose.
Residue recycling
Returning crop residues to the field instead of burning them.
Micronutrient management
Correcting zinc, boron and sulphur deficiencies that limit pulse yields.
Natural farming
Low-input, eco-friendly practices for long-term soil health.
Glimpses
Newspaper coverage carried the campaign message beyond the villages visited, contributing to the 10,000-plus farmers reached indirectly.
