Area of specialization
Plant Biochemistry
Research area
Abiotic stress tolerance in pulses.
Significant research achievements
- Identified key biochemical responses to heat stress in chickpea, demonstrating changes in glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamine oxoglutarate aminotransferase (GOGAT) and sucrose synthase (SS) activity associated with nitrogen assimilation and starch biosynthesis in developing seeds.
- Established biochemical markers of heat tolerance in chickpea — total phenolics, flavonoids, antioxidant potential and phytosterols under heat stress.
- Characterized heat-induced phenolic metabolites in chickpea using HPLC-DAD, demonstrating accumulation of syringic acid, sinapic acid, myricetin and other phenolics in heat-tolerant genotypes.
- Identified molecular determinants of heat tolerance using transcriptomics, detecting genotype-specific differentially expressed genes including LOC101514603 and LOC101515262 (18.5 kDa HSPs).
- Identified candidate genes associated with heat tolerance through genotype-specific expression of key genes in phenolic and phytosterol biosynthesis, providing potential molecular markers for heat-tolerant chickpea breeding.
