Division of Crop Improvement

Genetics & Plant Breeding · Molecular Breeding · Seed Science & Technology · Plant Genetic Resources — from basic studies on plant genomes to the improved varieties grown by farmers across India.

Established in the VIII Plan

Introduction

The Crop Improvement Division was established in the VIII Plan, when the Directorate of Pulses Research attained the status of Indian Institute of Pulses Research on 5 September 1993. Research efforts on breeding improved varieties of pulses had, however, begun with the establishment of the Directorate of Pulses Research in 1984.

The Division undertakes a broad range of activities, from basic studies on plant genomes to the development of improved varieties. It leads pulses research with a group of scientists of diverse specializations — plant breeding, genetics, cyto-genetics, seed research and molecular breeding. Plant genetic resource management and quality seed production are integral parts of the Division.

Thrust Areas & Research Strategies

Thrust areas

  • Exploitation of heterosis in pigeonpea.
  • Integrated approach for genetic enhancement through pre-breeding.
  • Development of suitable plant types for different agro-ecological conditions.
  • Genomics-enabled improvement of pulse crops.
  • Breeding for tolerance to drought and temperature extremities.
  • Breeding for improved quality.
  • Plant genetic resources management.
  • Maintenance breeding, breeder seed production and seed research.

Research strategies

  • Conventional and marker-assisted breeding for yield enhancement in specific ecological niches of the mandate pulse crops.
  • Pre-breeding efforts to break the yield ceiling and broaden the genetic base.
  • Exploitation of the three-line system of hybrid breeding in pigeonpea.
  • Development of bi- and multi-parental mapping populations for target traits.
  • Mapping and tagging of genes for major diseases, and MAS to improve resistance in high-yielding varieties.
  • Identification of donors for biotic and abiotic stress tolerance and grain / nutritional quality traits.
  • Sharing segregating material, donors, germplasm and improved breeding lines with AICRP centres.
  • Utilization of off-season nurseries for rapid generation advancement.
  • Allele mining of genes of agricultural importance, and international collaboration for methodology development and human resource development.
  • Maintenance breeding to ensure the availability of quality seed.
Programme

Crop-wise Priority Areas

Chickpea

  • Genetic enhancement and pre-breeding for yield enhancement and broadening the genetic base of existing cultivars.
  • Pyramiding of genes conferring resistance to fusarium wilt and dry root rot through an integrated plant breeding approach.
  • Development of heat and moisture stress tolerant varieties — QTL identification for drought, mechanism of heat tolerance.
  • Development of chickpea varieties suitable for mechanical harvesting and post-emergence herbicide tolerance.
  • Genetic enhancement for nutritional quality, grain quality, milling and processing attributes.

Pigeonpea

  • Exploitation of heterosis and development of commercial CGMS-based hybrids.
  • Development of improved varieties resistant to major biotic and abiotic stresses, and genetic enhancement through pre-breeding in long-duration pigeonpea.
  • Development of early maturing varieties insulated against pod fly damage.

Urdbean

  • High yielding varieties with main stem pod bearing, green or black seeds, resistant to yellow mosaic virus and Cercospora leaf spot.
  • Development of high yielding, MYMIV/MYMV and Cercospora leaf spot resistant varieties for spring / summer seasons.

Mungbean

  • Genetic improvement for grain yield and multiple biotic and abiotic stress resistance.
  • Development of medium-short duration and pre-harvest sprouting tolerant varieties with multiple disease resistance for the kharif season.

Lentil

  • High yielding varieties resistant to fusarium wilt, rust and stemphylium blight, combining higher biomass and early maturity for rice-fallow and utera cultivation.

Field pea

  • Genetic improvement for grain yield by combining higher biomass, stiff stem and few-leaflet traits, besides powdery mildew and rust resistance.

Cowpea

  • Development of high-yielding, short-duration, multi-purpose genotypes with resistance to multiple stresses.

Plant Genetic Resources

A pre-breeding garden has been established at IIPR consisting of wild accessions of different pulse crops. It includes 126 accessions of chickpea (C. pinnatifidum, C. judaicum, C. echinospermum, C. reticulatum, C. chorassanicum, C. bijugum and C. cuneatum) and 121 wild accessions of lentil belonging to five species and subspecies (Lens nigricans 7, L. culinaris ssp. orientalis 78, ssp. tomentosus 1, ssp. odemensis 13, and L. ervoides 13 accessions).

A further 57 wild accessions of Vigna — V. delzelliana, V. glabrescens, V. hainiana, V. mungo var. mungo and var. sylvestris, V. pilosa, V. radiata var. radiata, var. setulosa and var. sublobata, V. trilobata, V. umbellata, V. unguiculata, V. vexillata and V. trinervia — collected from the Western Ghats and procured from NBPGR are being maintained.

Facilities

Infrastructure

National Active Germplasm Site

IIPR maintains more than ten thousand accessions of the mandate crops in a medium-term cold module (4 °C, 40% relative humidity), where they can be held for four to five years without losing viability. Accessions are rejuvenated regularly, and this active collection is available for sharing with research workers across the country under a proper MTA for research use.

Molecular breeding laboratory

The Division has excellent facilities for basic research on molecular marker-assisted breeding and bioinformatics — well-equipped laboratories, medium-term cold modules, rainout shelters, glasshouses, environment-controlled chambers and net houses. Equipment includes a thermal cycler, gel documentation system, advanced research microscope, UV-VIS spectrophotometer, ultracentrifuge and tetrad PCR.

High-throughput hybridization facility

The Division has an excellent high-throughput hybridization facility for carrying out hybridization work round the year under controlled conditions. It is especially suited to short-statured crops such as mungbean, urdbean, chickpea and lentil.

Plant growth chamber

The Division has a plant growth chamber for experiments under controlled conditions, again especially suited to short-statured crops such as mungbean, urdbean, chickpea and lentil.

Solar bubble dryers

The Division has eight solar bubble dryers, which are of great importance for drying bulk harvested seed to a safe storage moisture content. They matter most in the kharif season, when ambient moisture is usually very high and pulses such as mungbean, urdbean and pigeonpea can be dried far faster.

Quality seed production

The Institute provides nucleus seed of high-yielding varieties of different pulse crops to ensure genetic purity. More than 500 quintals of breeder seed of six crops — chickpea, pigeonpea, mungbean, urdbean, lentil and fieldpea — is produced annually, besides truthfully labelled seed.
